As a last day thank you to Henry’s preschool teachers, I made these cute little chocolate and cherry cupcakes. The cakes themselves were a yummy Nigella recipe http://www.nigella.com/recipes/view/chocolate-cherry-cupcakes-144 , to which I added chopped glacé cherries. I topped them with a simple, creamy mascarpone frosting and fondant handprints, cherries and rainbows; from the preschool logo. Apparently, they were delicious!

cupcake update

It’s all been a bit quiet, I know, but I have been VERY busy. Mainly because I had my own bun in the oven – Molly Jasmine Heather Knott was born May 7th 2010 and has pretty much kept me occupied since (and for a while before too!). Anyway, I didn’t give up making cakes completely, here’s some pics of ones that I remembered to take pics of! If anyone would like any cupcakes (or big cakes for that matter!), please get in touch. 🙂

when i am an old woman i shall wear purple cupcakes

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin sandles, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people’s gardens
and learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer matts and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

These quirky little cupcakes were based on the above poem for Jasmine’s ladies weekend away. The light fruit cake bases were flavoured with orange, brandy, figs, sultanas and glace cherries and topped with white royal icing and edible clear sprinkles. All the toppers were taken from the poem and modelled with fondant. I think the sausages are my favourite!

jungle cupcakes

For a birthday party for little monkeys, Thomas and Reuben, I made these fantastic jungle themed cakes with monkey, banana, leaf, zebra and tiger striped toppers on that rapidly becoming classic combination of vanilla bases and buttercream icing. The monkeys, bananas and leaves were modelled from fondant and the stipes were painted by hand onto fondant circles with black food colouring for the animal prints.

neon and gold 80’s party cupcakes

Seeing as I had 60 of these little blighters to do for Paula’s 80’s themed birthday party, I stuck to the good old faithful vanilla base and vanilla buttercream icing. In gold cupcake cases, they were coloured with a ‘mega’ amount of purple, green and orange food colouring to match the party balloons and sprinkled with gold sugar balls. Totally coolarama!

very strawberry cupcakes and cheeky chocolate cupcakes

Both batches of these delightful little cupcakes were made for a christening/birthday party for a couple of little girls so it was thought that chocolate and strawberry flavours would keep everyone happy! The strawberry swirl bases and icing were flavoured with A LOT of luxury strawberry jam and topped with half a fresh strawberry. The chocolate bases were a trusty Delia recipe and topped with very chocolatey buttercream icing and milk and plain chocolate sprinkles.

thomas the tank engine cupcakes

These cute Thomas cupcakes were made for Rowan’s 3rd birthday party and were made from my usual light and fluffy vanilla sponge recipe and gorgeously sweet vanilla buttercream icing. All the toppers were made by hand from fondant icing and took quite a long time! And now featured here best of the web thomas button

lemony10

For David’s birthday dinner party, I made these lushiously lemony cupcakes as party favours. These beautifully simple cake were made from a light lemon sponge cake and decorated with lemon buttercream, yellow sugar sprinkles and shredded lemon zest. They smelt like a sugary-lemon-juicy pancake day and tasted fantastic!
